Key Stage 1 Phonics Scheme

At St Benedict’s we are using a scheme called ‘Floppy's Phonics’. At the core of Floppy's Phonics is the vigorous teaching of synthetic phonics. Synthetic phonics is simply the ability to convert a letter or letter group into sounds that are then blended together into a word. Children learn the 44 common sounds in the English language, and how to sound blend words, over a short period of time. This is alongside letter formation and writing. The more sounds they learn, the greater the range of texts they can read.
Children in EYFS and Year 1 are taught daily by their class teacher in a whole class setting supported by teaching assistants. Books are matched to the sounds that they are being taught. There is a clear progression of sounds being taught with high expectations.
