Gem Learning Powers
What are Gem Learning Powers?
What is Gem Power?
The St Benedict's Gem Power approach is a metacognitive approach to teaching, learning and personal development. Metacognition essentially means learning to be a learner. It builds children’s self-confidence as learners and, in turn, their self-esteem towards life. We have based our gems on the work of Dr. Tom Robson (scientist and educationalist) as research shows Children’s ability to reflect on themselves as learners (metacognition) is critical to children becoming resilient and successful learners.
We have 6 gems at St Benedict's and once they are all introduced to the children, we will use them in all we do. They will be frequently referred to in lessons and during unstructured times. Each week we have gem reflection time where pupils think about which powers they are great at using and where they need to improve.

Diamond Power
The Diamond Gem power reminds the children to be independent and to problem solve for themselves. Here are some ways they could use their Diamond Power at home:
- Don't rush to help children complete tasks - allow them time to have a go and think of ways they might be able to help themselves find the answer/do the task
- Diamond Points points for doing jobs around the house

Sapphire Power
The Sapphire Power reminds the children how to focus and encourages them be good listeners. Here are some ways they could use their Sapphire Power at home:
- Memory Games
- Build a card tower (lots of focus and a steady hand needed here!)
- Homework conditions for children - promoting environments where children can focus
- For children with additional needs, ensuring they are using their strategies to help (eg: fiddle toy)
- Listening and repeating instructions linked to games (I went to the shop and bought... ___ and a ___ etc)

Ruby Power
The Ruby Power reminds the children of the importance of kindness and understanding. With this power, the children are encouraged to recognise their own success but also to see excellence in others contributions and ideas. They are also reminded that it is important to understand how others might be feeling and to support everyone. Here are some ways they could use their Ruby Power at home:
- Ruby Games - noticing when children are thinking of others (words/ actions)
- Talking about the impact their actions might have on others - Eg: how could the ruby power help them with understanding?
- Sharing with us any Ruby acts your child/ family has done - we would love to celebrate these!

Emerald Power
The Emerald Power reminds the children of the importance of resilience. With this power, the children are encouraged to recognise mistakes as a way of learning, try things they might think are challenging, take risks and understand the importance of bouncing back from mistakes or difficult emotions. Here are some ways they could use their Emerald Power at home:
- Discuss learning with your child - explain how you are as a learner? How do you recover from set backs?
- Openly discuss mistakes - take pride in the correction of a mistake
- Get children to review their day by thinking about what was a challenge and how did they overcome it
- Allow children to have a go and find solutions for themselves (this links to the Diamond Power)

Pearl Power
The Pearl Power helps the children to recall information, make links between subjects and explain ideas clearly. It also helps children to voice their opinions and challenge ideas of others in a respectful way. The Pearl Power is used a lot in lessons when we are communicating ideas to each other and remembering information from previous learning. In class, we start our learning with 'Flash Tasks' and these are excellent examples of when we use our Pearl Power to remember information and communicate clearly what we know.
- Ask the children about their learning and ask questions to make them think about how they know
- Talk as a family - about anything!
- Listen attentively, take turns and build on others statements through games
- Support the children in their project homework (KS2) and encourage children to do 'extra learning' to share at school if they have a passion/ interest

Topaz Power
The Topaz Power is the ultimate power as it links all the other gems together to help children to work in collaboration to achieve a goal. The children have been reminded that to work successfully as a group we need to use all of our previous powers: problem solving; kindness and understanding; Resilience; focus and communication of ideas. The Topaz Power also help support sportsmanship through team work and this is an area we remind children of as we move through the year.
How can we use this power at home:
- Family challenges
- Working with a partner/friend/ sibling
- Modelling and supporting children with sportsmanship
- Reminding children of the Topaz power when they are competing in group games/ clubs
